Natural Open Cell Rubber

Natural Open Cell Rubber Sponge Material

Natural Open Cell Rubber Sponge

Natural Open Cell Rubber is one of the earliest forms of sponge rubber, created by incorporating a blowing agent such as baking soda – into uncured rubber. As the material cures, it expands under low pressure, much like a rising cake, forming a wide network of interconnected open cells.

In open cell rubber, each cell is linked to its neighbours, allowing air, gas, and water to move freely throughout the material. This structure gives it a significantly better compression set compared to closed cell rubbers. When compressed, air escapes easily from the cells, and once the pressure is released, air flows back in-enabling the rubber to return to its original shape, much like a kitchen sponge.

Open cell sponge rubber is available in both low and high densities, making it suitable for a wide range of industrial and commercial uses. Its ability to absorb shock and provide cushioning makes it ideal for repeated-use applications such as vacuum lifting seals, low-pressure gaskets, and expansion joints.
